EMDR Therapy
Emotional distress can turn life upside down.
Many people who seek EMDR therapy are thoughtful and self-aware. They often understand why they react the way they do, can describe their patterns clearly, and may even know the experiences that shaped those patterns.
And yet something still feels automatic. A partner’s comment can trigger an intense emotional reaction. Work conflicts lead to days of rumination. A memory from years ago still carries the same emotional weight.
People often say things like: “I know this shouldn’t affect me this much.” Or: “I understand where this comes from, but I still feel it.” Or: “I want my reactions to match who I am now, not what happened years ago.”
What they want is to feel calm and grounded in situations that once overwhelmed them – to trust their instincts again and make decisions without feeling controlled by old emotional reactions.
EMDR helps the brain get unstuck.
Past negative events can become stuck, creating repeating distress long after the event. EMDR therapy helps the brain process experiences that remain emotionally stuck.
When difficult experiences are not fully processed at the time they occur, the brain can continue reacting as if the event is still happening. That is why certain situations can trigger reactions that feel stronger than the present moment calls for.
EMDR works by activating the brain’s natural processing system. Through guided attention and bilateral stimulation – such as eye movements or tapping – the brain can reprocess experiences, storing them in more adaptive ways.
As this happens, the emotional intensity connected to those memories often decreases. Situations that once triggered strong reactions become more manageable. Your present reactions are guided by who you are today – rather than what happened in the past.
Here’s an overview of my approach.
We begin by understanding the experiences and patterns shaping your current emotional reactions – which may involve a major traumatic event or other experiences that have been hard to overcome.
Using EMDR techniques, we process the memories and experiences that continue to influence your nervous system.
As emotional intensity decreases, you will be able to navigate relationships and life situations with greater calm, clarity, and confidence.
Let’s get your life right side up.
Through EMDR, you can enter situations that once felt overwhelming and notice something different. Your body will feel calmer, your thoughts clearer, and your reactions more intentional.
You still remember what happened in your past – but it no longer carries the same emotional weight.
If you’re ready to explore whether EMDR therapy might help you experience that shift, the next step is simply reaching out for a consultation. We can talk about what you’re experiencing and whether this approach feels like a good fit.
